Abstract

Introduction: Adequate hydration status is very important for older athletes half marathon in order that the public is more susceptible to dehydration. Objective: To investigate the practice of hydration in older athletes in training and assess moisture levels before a half marathon test as well as changes in the water levels at the end of the race. Methods: The sample consisted of 10 individuals 8 men and 2 women with an average age of (66.20±3.82 years) regular practitioners of endurance races. The practice of hydration was assessed by questionnaire and hydration status in the half marathon was assessed before and after the race by the following parameters: body weight and urine specific gravity (USG). Data analysis was performed using the Student t test. It is considered statistically significant p<0.05. Results: There was reduction of the body weight of individuals after the race (p<0.001). There was a relative dehydration (DR) of 0.93±0.37 and a percentage weight loss (%WL) of 1.30±0.38. Despite the decline observed in USG after the race, the athletes finished the race still significantly dehydrated. The room temperature (RT) and relative humidity (RH) were 9.25±2.87°C and 82.25±13.79%, respectively. Conclusion: The athletes had a regular hydration practice, however, with inadequate habits during training. On race day, it was verified a significant dehydrated state before starting the competition that could lead to a possible chronic dehydration throughout the race.
