Influence of number of series on blood pressure response after a strength training session in elderly hypertensive women

Abstract

The number of series influence on blood pressure responses after strength training (ST). The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of different volumes of ST in the hypotensive effect. The sample consisted of 12 hypertensive elderly women who were submitted to two sessions with two and four sets, 10 repetitions and two-minute rest interval. Blood pressure (BP) was measured at rest, at the end of the last series of the last financial year and for 20 minutes after the TF sessions. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA for repeated measures by SPSS 20.0. The level of significance was set at p <0.05. Results were both sessions promoted similarly increased BP. However, the session with two series resulted in statistical difference in reduction of systolic BP (SBP) at the 20º minute of recovery, while the training session with four series did not result in differences. According to the results of this study, the ST applied with a lower volume of training was effective in BP reduction.
