Effect of tai chi chuan practice on self-esteem and self-image of the elderly
Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tai chi chuan practice self-esteem and self-image of older urban area. Method: We performed an experimental quantitative study with 30 elderly aged 60 to 70 years, of both sexes. The elderly were divided into three groups: (A) sedentary elderly; (B) physically active elderly and (C) tai chi chuan practitioners. The chuan tai chi program lasted two months being practiced three (3) times a week, lasting 60 minutes each class. To evaluate self-esteem and self-image was used a structured questionnaire and validated in Brazil for the elderly, which was applied as an interview. For data analysis we used descriptive and inferential statistics to a significance level of p≤0.05. results: This study was 66.7% female, characterized with an average age of 65.60±3.14, 1.67±0.62 height and weight 65.66±9.66. From the results obtained in this study demonstrated the superiority of Group C for the other groups, it can confirm the effectiveness of the practice of Tai chi chuan in self-esteem and self-image of older people. Conclusion: Thus, we found a significant increase in self-esteem and self-image scores of Tai Chi Chuan practitioner group to the other groups.
