Effects of caffeine supplementation on performance, perceived exertion and perceived pain during strength training: a review
Abstract
The effect of caffeine supplementation on performance, rating of perceived of exertion (RPE) and pain perception on resistance training is still not well established. Thus, the purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the state of the art of the effects of caffeine supplementation on performance, RPE and pain perception, during resistance training. The literature review was the systematic type, using databases: Pubmed, Medline, Scielo and PsycINFO, applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria previously established. Caffeine changes were significant when performed in multiple series, as well as in lower body exercises. PSE did not present conclusive results. Caffeine has been shown to be a possible attenuation of pain perception, being associated with increased on performance during resistance training. Caffeine supplementation is presented as an important ergogenic aid in performance and a perception of pain during a resistance training practice.
