Bodybuilders’ knowledge degree about anabolic steroids
Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the knowledge of bodybuilders who workout at gyms regarding anabolic androgenic steroids, in a sample of 212 bodybuilders, of 3 gyms, 2 from Joinville/SC and 1 from Jaraguá do Sul/SC. For the data measurement it was used a questionnaire consisting of closed and open questions, previously validated. The instrument was applied to the gyms for the people who wanted to participate. The data have been analyzed through descriptive statistic (frequency and percentage). The data show that: 46,22% know users of steroids, 25,47% state that they have already heard about the subject even though they don’t use the substance and 16,50% declare that they know a lot about the subject. Men showed that they know the subject better than women; all the individuals of the sample pointed out more than one side effect of steroids. Given that, the five most pointed out effects were impotence; cardiac and circulation problems; virilization; gynecomasty and several liver problems. 23 bodybuilders stated that they have already used steroids; 17 of them have used the drug voluntarily, only 9 of the 23 individuals had a medical follow up during or after the use of steroids. To summarize, the bodybuilders show that their knowledge degree about anabolic steroids is considerably satisfactory. It is recommended to carry out more studies in this area and also raise questions about the subject at the gyms in order to advise people, this could also be added as a subject to be developed by the teachers and the instructors.
