Association of age and BMI with the performance of functional fitness of woman elderly
Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the associations between age and BMI with the performance of elderly women in physical tests. The sample consisted of 72 women aged 67.2 ± 4.9 years, height 1.54 ± 6.7 cm, weight 64.2 ± 10 kg, physical exercise practitioners 3.7 ± 2.3 years, classified according to the cut-off points of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO): low weight (13.88%), eutrophy (43.05%), overweight (15.27%) and obesity (27, 77%). The evaluation of the functional level of the elderly was carried out through the motor tests of the Latin American Development Group for Maturity (GDLAM). The possible associations between age and BMI with performance in the tests were tested using Spearman correlation (r). The elderly had scores "good" for "very good" on functional fitness tests, and the low-weight group got the best GI. The results of the correlations indicate that age and BMI presented associations with only three physical tests (r = 0.27, p ˂ 0.01 between Age and C10M, r = 0.25, p ˂ 0.02 between BMI and LPS; r = 0.24, p ˂ 0.03 between BMI and LPDV). We conclude that the use of the variables age and BMI showed no correlation with determining the functional performance of elderly, However, these associations may have been minimized by years of practice with physical exercises.
