Abstract

Introduction. Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common pathology, affecting 44-70% of people over 50, and up to 85% of people over 75 years. Exercise and reduction of mechanical factors on the joint can provide improvement. Objective. Evaluate and compare the metabolic demand of the protocol through the analysis of: heart rate (HR), blood glucose (GLI), lactate concentration (LAC) and pain scale, at the beginning and end of a therapy session at the end of protocol experimental. Method. Ten elderly subjects (68.60 ± 7.68 years, 155.60 ± 4.97cm, 77.90 ± 11.68kg) were evaluated, with knee AO (grade 1e2). The intervention was performed for 4 weeks, 3 times per week, exercises performed by 3 sets of 10 repetitions with 70% of the load of a maximum repetition, strengthening exercises for the knee flexor and extensor muscles, abductor / extensor / rotator-lateral muscles of the hip and plantar flexors. FC, LAC, GLI and pain were measured pre and post intervention and pre and post protocol, T test, level of significance was used: p <0.05. This project was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (Opinion 1,031,341 approved in April 2015). Results. There was a significant increase in LAC only in the first intervention (p = 0.0108), GLI presented difference in the second intervention (p = 0.0152) and between the two (p = 0.0067), HR showed difference between only the two interventions (0.0448), the pain showed a significant difference between the interventions (p = 0.0007). Conclusion. The muscle strengthening protocol was able to beneficially influence pain intensity, concentration of LAC and GLI.
