Association of anthropometric and bioimpedance variables in different levels of cardiorrespiratory fitness
Abstract
Introduction: The cardiorespiratory capacity and body composition are components of greater relevance in the dimension of physical fitness directed to health. Objective: The aim of this study was to associate anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) variables according to cardiorespiratory fitness. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 38 workers from the industrial branch of Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil, aged 26 to 50 years, 26 of whom were female. The evaluations included anthropometric, BIA and cardiorespiratory evaluation. In the anthropometry, the variables of body mass index (BMI), percentage of fat (%FAT), fat weight and muscle weight were used. In the BIA, the variables equivalent to the previous ones were focused, such as body mass index (BMIBIA), percentage of fat (%FATBIA), fat mass and skeletal muscle mass (SMM). For cardiorespiratory fitness, an ergospirometric test was performed using the indirect modified Bruce protocol. According to the classification levels, these were dichotomized into two groups: below the mean (G1) and above the mean (G2). Results: Differences were observed between BMI, BMIBIA and fat mass between the groups, presenting higher values in G2. In addition, the results indicated that the variables of both methods showed a similar behavior regarding the correlation in both groups, with strong correlations in all variables, except for muscle weight-SMM variables association in G2, which showed a moderate correlation. Conclusion: It can be observed that both methods are considered valid, however, one must consider the possibility of errors in the evaluations, and it is necessary to carry them out with caution.
