Individual lifestyle profile in phsically inactive individuals and pilates practitioners
Abstract
Introduction: physical exercise is an important strategy for improving health and quality of life. Furthermore, physical inactivity is associated with several diseases, mainly fatal cardiovascular outcomes. It is well known that physical exercises using the Pilates method determine benefits in flexibility and muscle strength. However, the association of the lifestyle of Pilates practitioners with that of physically inactive individuals has not yet been established. Objective: to compare the lifestyle of women practicing Pilates with a physically inactive group. Materials and methods: the sample consisted of women practicing Pilates for at least 3 months (GMP;n=22) and physically inactive women (GIF;n=22), randomly recruited in a public place. The Individual Lifestyle Profile questionnaire (Pentacle of Well-being) was used and the difference was analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U Test (p<0.050). Results: in the “nutrition” dimension, the GMP demands more care with food than the GFI (p<0.001). The “preventive behavior” of the GMP showed higher scores than the GFI (p<0.001), evidencing a direct concern with the lifestyle. As for the “social relationship”, the GMP showed better social interaction than the GFI (p=0.002), regardless of the Pilates classes. Finally, the “stress control” showed that the GMP is more careful when compared to the GFI (p=0.009). Conclusion: we showed that there is an association between a better lifestyle and the regular practice of Pilates, evidencing not only the direct benefit of the modality, but also a general characterization of a healthier life.
