Knowledge production about muscle dysmorphia: systematic review
Abstract
Introduction: Muscle Dysmorphia (MD) is a body dysmorphic disorder with a growing prevalence. Objective: To analyze scientific production about MD in physical exercise practitioners. Materials and Methods: It was used the PRISMA recommendations to conduct the systematic review. The electronic search was performed in six databases. Results: Of 912 studies screened, 67 satisfied the inclusion criteria. It is observed that the majority of studies focused on factors associated with MD (16), followed by symptoms (11) and prevalence (7) of MD. Most of the studies were conducted by researchers from institutions in the United States (25), followed by Australia (11) and Spain (11), mainly belonging to the area of Psychology. Regarding the sample, most of the studies investigated strength training practitioners (17) and students and adolescents (14). Conclusion: It is concluded that this is a subject of recent exponential growth, mainly from 2012. Most of the studies were published by researchers from institutions of the United States and belonging to the area of Psychology. The publications have shown focus on the factors associated with DM. It is observed that although the first publications aim to investigate the classification and diagnosis of DM, there is still a lack of clarity regarding their respect.
