Abstract

Verify the influence of resistance exercise (RE) on intraocular pressure (IOP) in different phases of menstrual cycle. We studied nine women (27.4 + 7.5 years old) undergoing to RE sessions performed during: ovulatory phase (14-16 day of menstrual cycle) e luteal phase (25-28 day of menstrual cycle). The IOP measurement was taken in both eyes with Perkins tonometer before (M1), during exercise (M2), immediately after (M3) and five minutes after ending of the exercise session (M4).  All data were analyzed by descriptive tests. Statistical analysis included Kolmogorov-Smirnov to test normality and ANOVA with Bonferroni post-test, alpha was set at p<0.05. We found significant statistical differences in RT session during luteal phase (right eye) among IOP of M1 (14.1 + 1.1 mmH) with M2 (11 + 2.1 mmHg; p<0.001), M3 (10.8 + 1.9 mmHg; p<0.001) and M4 (11.3 + 1.3 mmHg; p<0.05), in the same phase, but in left eye we observed differences among IOP of M1 (14.5 + 1.8 mmH) in M2 (11.1 + 2.5 mmHg; p<0.01), M3 (11.3 + 2.5 mmHg; p<0.001) and M4 (11.8 + 1.1 mmHg; p<0.05). On the other hand, in ovulatory phase RT session significant statistical differences were shown, just in left eye, among IOP of M1 (13.8 + 3.6 mmHg) with M2 (10.6 + 2.6 mmHg; p<0.01), M3 (10.5 + 3.1 mmHg; p<0.01). Descriptively IOP was higher in all measurements in luteal phase. The IOP, of women with regular menstrual cycle, decreased during and after RE session, irrespective of phase (ovulatory or luteal).  These findings can contribute to improve prescription of exercise to women with risk factors or with high IOP.
