Abstract

For many years, the lactate threshold has been investigated as a trustworthy indicator of the high level athletes performance for 5 Km race and longer, including marathon. However, few researches have demonstrated connection between the training in the lactate threshold and the performances of sedentary persons, children, untrained people, special persons, etc. With the purpose of checking the evolution of power and maximum aerobic capacity parameters in young boys just incorporated to Brazilian Army, twenty male and untrained pupils of the Núcleo de Preparação de Oficiais da Reserva (NPOR), with ages between 18 and 19, trained during two months, five times a week, with individual loads. The pupils were separated in two groups “A” and “B” with n=10 for each group. The training intensities were, respectively, 90% and 110% of the race speed corresponding to 4.0mM of blood lactate concentration. The protocol used to determina-te the maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the lactate threshold at 4.0mM was the 3200 meters test proposed by Weltman (1987). The results had shown significant increases of the VO2max the lactate threshold in the group that trained at 90%. There were also changes in the mentioned variables in the group that trained at 110%, but the increments were shorter. The results allow to conclude that the aerobic training program based on race with intervals and high intensity continuous race, allied to 90% and 110% intensity of the lactate threshold at 4.0mM, had increased the capacity and the aerobic power of both analyzed groups"
