Level of physical activity among community dwelling elderly: data base study
Abstract
Objective: to evaluate the level of physical activity of elderly. Methods: this was an epidemiological study, the cross-section type, performed with all elderly people aged 60 years or over, registered at the Brazilian family health strategy, residents in the urban area of the city of Aiquara-BA, Brazil. The population was composed of 232 elderly. For the collection of data was used a standardized instrument containing information about the socio-demographic characteristics, personal information and habitual physical activity level was measured by IPAQ-adapted version to the elderly. For the analysis of the data will be used the descriptive analysis of variables in addition to statistical inference, through the chi-square test, used for comparison of independent proportions, using categorical variables. All statistical protocol observed a statistical significance level of 5% (p < 0.05). Data were analyzed with the aid of the program SPSS version 21.0. Results and discussion: the average age was 71.6 years (DP+ 7.46), with a maximum age of 93 years. In relation to the level of physical activity, 53.9% of the elderly were classified as physically inactive. To assess the association between sociodemographic characteristics was observed that there was a higher percentage of men physically inactive (66.3%). Conclusions: we observed a high prevalence of physically inactive, being on your most elderly male.
