Acute exercise versus immune suppression: perhaps only another homeostatic mechanism
Abstract
O objetivo principal deste trabalho é discutir conclusões de múltiplos estudos realizados até o momento, envolvendo principalmente respostas agudas do exercício intenso sobre a função imunitária. Em linhas gerais, as conclusões destes estudos destacam efeitos negativos da carga de estresse colocada pelo exercício sobre a imunidade dos atletas, recreacionais ou de elite, levando conseqüentemente estes indivíduos a maior predisposição a infecções do trato respiratório superior (ITRS). Recentes estudos têm lançado nova luz sobre os achados de infecções do trato respiratório superior, que interessantemente parecem não estar, na sua maioria, associadas a agentes patogênicos, descaracterizando o termo “infecção”. Desta maneira, especialistas neste tema propõem que os sinais apresentados por estes indivíduos sejam chamados de sintomas similares à de ITRS, pois podem estar relacionados a inflamações assépticas do trato respiratório superior e não à infecção per se. Trabalhos futuros que corroborem estas informações podem, portanto, abrir nova visão e perspectiva sobre os chamados efeitos “imunossupressores” ou “anti-inflamatórios” do exercício físico. Sob esta nova ótica, pode-se sugerir que estes efeitos são de fato mecanismos de homeostase imunitária que previnem a destruição de tecidos sadios por mecanismos imunitários acionados pelos sinais de estresse liberados durante o exercício. Essa nova discussão se faz necessária devida à falta de completa compreensão dos mecanismos e propósitos envolvidos nas modificações que ocorrem nos números, proporções e funcionamento das células e espécies moleculares com função imunitária, durante e pós-exercício físico.
