Influence of body mass index on physical fitness level of elementary school children
Abstract
Changes in eating habits, especially in children, can trigger overweight and obesity. In view of this, excess fat accumulation and its poor body distribution can impact on several consequences for health and physical fitness. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of the body mass index (BMI) on the components of physical fitness in male children from Elementary School. The sample consisted of 50 children from private schools and the collections were made in the schools themselves. At first, all anthropometric assessments and explosive strength tests (vertical jump and horizontal jump) were performed. In a second moment (48h later), the remaining assessments were performed, being flexibility and cardiorespiratory capacity. According to the data obtained, there was a significant difference in the cardiorespiratory capacity test between the eutrophic (ET) and overweight (SB) groups compared to the obese (OB) group (p=0.03 and p=0.02 respectively). In the vertical jump test, there was a difference between the SB x OB groups (p=0.05). In the flexibility and horizontal jump results, there was no significant difference between the groups. Thus, it is concluded that obesity, in the children under study, can affect their aerobic capacity and strength when compared to eutrophic and overweight children.
