Physical Fitness related to the motor performance of schoolchildren, resident in Petrolina-PE, Sertão Northeastern
Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the physical fitness (PA) of schoolchildren, aged between 8-12 years, in tests of abdominal strength, explosive strength of upper and lower limbs and agility, as well as classifying the results, according to sex and age, through the PROESP-BR battery regulations. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 723 schoolchildren of both sexes, from the municipal network of Petrolina-PE. The tests applied were: i) lower limb strength; ii) upper limb strength; iii) abdominal strength; and, iv) agility test. Lower limb deficit was found in 52.8% of the girls and 27.1% of the boys (p≤0.05). 41.4% of the boys attested to a normal strength level for the upper limbs, while 46.9% of the girls showed poor performance (p≥0.05). Abdominal strength deficit was observed in 57.1% of girls and 24.9% of boys (p≤0.05). The agility test was the only one in which the girls showed better performance, thus, 26.1% indicated a poor performance, while 55.6% of the boys indicated a deficit (p≤0.05). It is concluded that, comparatively, girls showed low PA levels, verifying the need to encourage the regular practice of physical exercises for both sexes, between 8-12 years old.
