Acute effect of passive static stretching on muscular strength performance: a systematic review
Abstract
The use of stretching as a form of warm-up is a traditional practice before performing physical exercises and the passive static stretching (PSS) is widely used because of its easy application and safety The purpose of this review was to investigate acute effect of the PSS in strength performance. Therefore was performed a search of the studies produced in the last 10 years together with the databases Pubmed, Scielo and Bireme, using the following descriptors: strength performance, static stretching, resistance training, stretching, as well assimilar descriptors in portuguese. Experimental studies that evaluated the acute effect of PSS on strength performance in 1 repetition maximal (1RM), maximal repetitions and isokinetic dynamometry tests were selected. The scientific literature is still contradictory regarding the use or not of stretching exercises prior to strength exercises. The duration of the PSS series is always considered as a reference for the application of the PSA protocols, although other variables seem to be more important .Considering the results found, the use of low or high volume causes similar effects, and the intensity during the stretching exercise is determinant in the effect of interference in the strength performance, being a solution to solve this question seems to be related to the recovery time between the end of the stretching exercise and the beginning of the strength exercise. The use of PSS prior to strength exercises does not show an effective strategy due to its acute negative effect on the strength performance, however we can use some strategies to decrease and / or eliminate the negative effect of PSS.
