Influence of resistance training on the diagnostic criteria of metabolic syndrome and functional capacity of elderly women
Abstract
Introduction: Metabolic Syndrome (MS) is an interaction of cardiovascular risk indicators, and its prevalence increases with age. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies for functional disability in the elderly population. Resistance Training (TR) is widely used because it produces beneficial effects such as increased muscle mass, strength development, and improved functional capacity. Objectives: To verify the influence of resistance exercises on the diagnostic criteria of the Metabolic Syndrome and the functional capacity of elderly women. Materials and Methods: Interventional, prospective and quantitative field study; including 10 women between 60 and 75 years. Abdominal Circumference, Systolic Blood Pressure, Diastolic Blood Pressure, HDL-cholesterol, fasting glycemia and triglycerides were evaluated. For functional capacity, the AVD-Glittre Test was applied. The RT protocol consisted of 8 weeks, performed 2 times on non-consecutive days. Results and Discussion: There was a decrease in SBP (p = 0.034), which was a significant benefit in decreasing cardiovascular events. About the increase in triglycerides (p = 0.022), there are contradictions about the relationship with TR, due to differences in weekly frequency, training status or pre-training lipid levels. PAD, fasting glycemia, HDL-cholesterol and functional capacity showed improvements, but not significant. Conclusion: Resistance exercises were positive for SBP in women with MS. Despite the reduced runtime of the AVD-Glittre Test, results on functional capacity were not significant.
