Heart rate variability, technical actions, metabolic and cardiovascular aspects of competitive surfing
Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify relationships between autonomic nervous system responses with technical actions, metabolic and cardiovascular adjustments during competitive surfing. The sample consisted of 15 male professional surfers, aged 25.7 ± 2.5 years. Results are presented as mean ± standard deviation. Measured metabolic data showed that plasma blood lactate concentration increased significantly during functional wave use for maneuvering to 5.3 ± 0.71 mmol / L blood. Blood glucose concentration decreased when compared to the pre-exercise phase, from 104.3 ± 2.25 mg / dL to 74.7 ± 6.61 mg / dL at the end of the competitive battery. HR remained high (159 ± 7 b · min-1). After the recovery phase there was a reduction in total HRV in the components that suggest time domain vagal modulation, the pNN10 index decreased from 33.1 ± 5.9 (ms) to 7.3 ± 3.9 (ms) and the RMSSD of 57.2 ± 7.5 (ms) to 21.9 ± 5.6 (ms). The results allow us to infer that there is a direct relationship between autonomic activity to modulate the cardiovascular and metabolic modifications necessary for the maintenance of organic homeostasis during competitive surfing practice.
