Trunk muscle strength assessment using a handheld dynamometer - between-days reliability
Abstract
Introduction: Lumbar muscles are essential for trunk stability, necessary for upper and lower limbs movements in daily life and sports activities. The assessment of these muscles performance usually involves resistance tests. However, besides muscle resistance, muscle strength is necessary for functional stability, mainly during sports movements. Objective: To investigate between-sessions reliability of trunk muscles strength assessment using a handheld dynamometer. Materials and methods: Ten men were assessed in two sessions, with one week between them. The dynamometer was positioned in the proximal region of the trunk, under a nylon belt, which provided resistance against the movement. Trunk anterior flexors, lateral flexors and extensors were assessed in supine, lateral and prone positions, respectively. Three maximal isometric contractions of 5 seconds each were assessed for each muscle group. The mean peak force was used for calculating the intraclass correlation coefficient, standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change. Results: Excellent reliability was shown for muscle strength assessment of anterior and lateral trunk flexors and good reliability for trunk extensors. Conclusion: The handheld dynamometer may be used to assess maximal strength of trunk muscles, since it provides an accessible tool to identify deficits and follow up conditioning programs outcomes.
