The incidence of patellar tendonitis in basketball players: A systematic review
Abstract
Patellar tendonitis is a common infection in athletes who practice recurrent jumping sports such as basketball. A patellar tendonitis increase with the knee extension mechanism overdone. Tendonitis is an overused inflammatory condition that occurs as a result of one or more aggregate tendons. In basketball practice there are frequent changes of senses and physical touch, facilitating the emergence of various pathologies. Objectives: To analyze and update the knowledge on the incidence of patellar tendonitis (bouncy knee) in basketball players. Materials and Methods: It consisted of a systematic review in the PubMed, SciELO, BVS and PEDro databases by articles published between 2009-2019, through the keywords: tendonitis, patella, tendon, basketball and muscle. Functional tests of Portuguese and English origin were included. Literature review, studies that presented only the etiological and pathological aspects were excluded. Epidemiological profile studies, inadequacy to the proposed theme and PEDro score below 5. Results: 8 studies were included because they met the eligibility criteria. The total sample consisted of 1,115 participants of both sexes, aged 13 to 25 years. These were submitted to evaluation, functional tests and questionnaires. These interventions were performed comparatively or associated. Conclusion: The incidence of patellar tendonitis is significant among the most common knee injuries in sports that use jumping such as basketball, interfering with athlete's performance, decreased training and even abandonment of the sport.
