Benefits of the training of force and swimming on the functional independence of patient with injury medullartetraparesia (a case study)
Abstract
Introduction: The sport has a basic paper in the physical rehabilitation of patients with medullar injury because of enlarging the therapeutic alternatives and favoring the functional independence. Objective:The study had since objective knew the effects of the strength training and swimming on functional skills of patients with medullar injury. Methods: It the question isa case study, where an individual was analyzed with 32 years of age with tetraparesia with injury of C5, subjected to a program of exercises in the water and in academy. The patient was valued through the Measure of Functional Independence (Scale MIF) before and after the proceeding that consisted of fulfilled sessions of swimming twice weekly during three months and of the academy of a period of two months three times weekly, being carried out only three exercises, being they: leg extension, bench leg curl and leg press. Results: The patient presented significant changes in all the evaluated segments, being that in the control sphincter the biggest signification of improvement happened. Conclusion: The activity of swimming and strength training and swimming (the biggest improvement happened after the beginning of the strength training) was effective in the improvement of the physical condition, bringing driving benefits on the functional skills of the patient.
