The Decrease in the number of repetitions and the total volume in strength training induced by static stretching is restored after 10 minutes
Abstract
The aim of the study was to test whether the recovery time between stretching and the beginning of the resistance training session influences the number of repetitions and total volume of the Resistance training session. 12 healthy male individuals participated in this study (28,6 ± 4,5 years, 87,9 ± 5,9 kg, 177 ± 3,4 cm). Three experimental sessions were designed to familiarization and 1 repetition maximum in the leg press. Then, four more visits were carried out in random order and with intervals of 72 hours between them. In each visit all volunteers initially performed the static stretching protocol and subsequently the RT session. However, the time between the end of the stretching protocol and the beginning of the RT session ranged in all four experimental sessions (imediatelly after, 5-, 10- and 20 minutes after stretching). Results: The number of repetitions and total volume decreased in the sessions performed immediately (p<0,001) and 5 minutes after stretching (p<0,001) when compared to the pre-intervention session. However, the decreased number of repetitions and total volume was restored within 10 (p<0,001) and 20 minutes (p<0,001) after stretching when compared to the session performed immediately after stretching. Conclusion: We concluded that the decrease in the number of repetitions and total volume of the resistance exercise induced by static stretching is temporary, being restored after a 10-minute interval between stretching and resistance exercise.
