Effect of complementary training on the physical fitness of classical dancers: systematic review
Abstract
The study purpose was to review the effect of complementary training on the classical dancer’s physical fitness. This analysis was made through a review of five original papers that address different training programs, with publication year starting in 2010. As an inclusion criterion, it was necessary for the dancers to present a good considerable technical level and to practice some type of extra-class training aimed at improving physical skills relevant to the practice of ballet. The results indicate positive effects on the performance of classical dancers, with its effectiveness being observed in four of the articles included in this review. It has been observed increase in strength, flexibility, static balance, and even the improvement of musculoskeletal and physiological characteristics. It was concluded that complementary training, highlighting Pilates and resistance exercises, can improve the performance of classical dancers.
