Acute effect of a single hydrogymnastic session on the mood status of elderly elderly in a gym in Carandaí-MG
Abstract
Physical exercise is of great importance in the lives of the elderly, as it promotes an improvement in their mood, thus providing healthy aging. The aim of the study was to evaluate the acute effect of water aerobics classes on the mood state of elderly women. The research was carried out in a gym in the city of Carandaí-MG. The instruments used to collect data in the research were a sample characterization questionnaire and the reduced Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire to assess the state that it was applied before and after a water aerobics class. The normality of the data was checked using the Shapiro-Wilk test, to compare the values of the POMS domains pre vs post, the paired t test (normal distribution) or Wilcoxon (non-normal distribution) was applied. To verify differences between mood domains, the ANOVA test of repeated measures was used. The SigmaPlot statistical package, version 11.0, was used, a significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyzes. We observed that a water aerobics session resulted in an improvement in mood, pointing to a reduction in Total Mood Disorder and the factors Tension, Depression, Hostility and Confusion and an increase in Stamina. The conclusion of a single session of water aerobics has positive effects on the mood, generating improvement in the physical and mental wellness of the elderly.
