Physical activity: how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected the habits of undergraduate medical students
Abstract
This work aimed to compare the differences in physical activity habits amongst undergraduate medical students from Centro Universitário para o Desenvolvimento do Alto Vale do Itajaí (UNIDAVI) before and during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The research counted on 154 students comprehended from the 3rd to the 8th terms. The level of physical activity was measured through two copies of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, being one form related to the period prior to the pandemic and the other associated with the period during its episode. Comparing pre and during the pandemic time frames, it was noticed that there was an increase in the number of students that perceived their health as good and a decrease in those who perceived it as very good. There was a decrease in the time spent in cars/buses as well as in the time walking. Regarding cycling and walking paces, there was a decrease in both. Another decrease was found in the time spent with vigorous activities. Concerning the amount of time the students spent sitting down during the week and weekends, there was an increase in both. We concluded that there was a worsening in the perception of health status, a decrease in the time spent in cars/buses and in the time invested in walking and in vigorous activities. There was a decrease in walking and paces and an increase in the time the students spent sitting down.
