The effect of relative age on BMX athletes
Abstract
Objective: To verify the occurrence of EIR in athletes who participated in the BMX world championship - 2019 in the junior and elite male and junior and elite female categories. For this study, we used a sample of 240 athletes who participated in the 2019 BMX World Championship, divided into their respective categories. Dates of birth were collected from the official Union Cycliste International website and further classified into quartiles (Q), i.e. January to March (Q1), April to June (Q2), July to September (Q3) and October to December (Q4), and by semesters (S), January to July (S1) and August to December (S2). The chi-square test (x2) was used for statistical analysis and p<0.05 was adopted for significant differences. The results of the present study did not indicate a significant difference for the distribution of births between the quartiles of the year in any of the analyzed categories (p>0.05). It is concluded that the EIR was not observed in the athletes participating in the BMX World Championship - 2019 in all categories analyzed.
