Correlation between agility, speed and power of lower limbs of teenagers capoeira players
Abstract
Introduction: The history of capoeira is connected to the history of Brazil. The movement of capoeira was inspired by animals and used as a form of defense of the enslaved people. Attacks, defenses, and flourishes require motor skills such as agility, speed and capoeirista power. However, little is known about the physical performance characteristics in capoeiristas adolescents. Aim: Correlate the functional performance of agility, speed, and power of lower limbs of capoeiristas adolescents. Materials and methods: Twenty-one young male capoeira practitioners aged 16.5±1.3 years participated in the study. Shuttle run (SR) tests were used to assess agility, 50-meter run (C50) for speed and horizontal jump (SH) for lower limb power. Statistics with mean, standard deviation and Spearman correlation were adopted (p<0.05, SPSS v. 22.0). Discussion and resulted: The results obtained in the SR, C50 and SH tests were 11.0 ±1.0 s; 7.2 ±0.9 s and 191.1 ±25.7 cm, respectively. There were inversely proportional correlations between SH and SR (r = -0.69; p<0.01), SH and C50 (r = -0.57; p<0.01) and directly proportional between SR and C50 (r = 0.55; p<0.01). In this sense, the importance of training such skills together is highlighted, since there are correlations between them. Conclusion: The physical abilities investigated (SR, C50 and SH) are correlated in capoeirista adolescents. Aiming at the best performance in capoeira, interventions are recommended that enhance such aptitudes, which even though they are different, are associated and can contribute to the aspect of sports development of the practitioner.
