The effect of resistance training on body composition and quality of life in an adolescent with moderate intellectual disability (F-71): a case study
Abstract
Observing the current scenario, the intellectually disabled seek more and more space in society and physical exercise is one of the means of inclusion for them. The study aimed to discover the effect of resistance training on body composition and quality of life in an adolescent with moderate intellectual disability (F-71). This is a case study, with an exploratory character and a quantitative approach. A 17-year-old adolescent resident in Patos-PB participated in the study. As instruments were used a digital scale, a stadiometer and an adipometer that collected data on the body composition of the respondent, which were analyzed in the Body Move program. For the assessment of quality of life, the WHOQOL-bref-ID-proxy questionnaire was applied, which was applied with the legal guardian of the adolescent before and after the intervention., and the analysis of the quality of life questionnaire was carried out in the EXCEL 2016 program, where all the data collected in the questionnaire were placed. It was found after 3 months of intervention that the body mass of the adolescent who was 100.6 kg in the pre-intervention had a reduction of 3 kg after the-intervention, reaching 97.6 kg. In relation to the percentage of fat, there was a reduction of 1.6% after the intervention. Data obtained from the post-intervention quality of life assessment show that the participant had an evolution in relation to the pre-intervention. Thus, it is concluded that resistance training causes a positive effect both on body composition and on the quality of life of an intellectually disabled person.
