Contribution of energy systems in taekwondo anaerobic intermittent kick test: a pilot study
Abstract
Introduction and objective: Anaerobic power is one of the main differentiating factors in athletes of different levels in taekwondo, being related to success in international level competitions. The aim of the present study was to estimate the contribution of energetic systems in the Taekwondo Anaerobic Intermittent Kick Test (TAIKT). Materials and methods: 5 male taekwondo athletes (16.6 ± 1.8 years; 170.1 ± 9.1 cm in height and body mass of 70.2 ± 19.5 kg) performed the TAIKT and data of oxygen consumption, blood lactate concentration, rate of perceived exertion and heart rate were collected during the same. The TAIKT consisted of 6 rounds of 5s of the Bandal-Tchagui kick alternated by 10s of active rest (bouncing), and provided absolute and relative peak power data, as well as absolute and relative average power. The energy contribution analysis was performed using the GedaeLAB software, which uses the session's oxygen consumption as well as blood lactate measurements to estimate the contribution of the aerobic (AER), lactic anaerobic (LAT) and alactic anaerobic (AL) system. Results: The respective contributions of the systems in TAIKT were: AER=29.68 ± 6.49; LAT= 22.84 ± 3.37 and AL = 47.48 ± 9.36, totaling about 70.1% of anaerobic contribution during the test. Conclusion: there is a predominance of contribution of the anaerobic system in the energy supply during the execution of TAIKT, characterizing it as a specific anaerobic test for the modality.
