The practice of team sports and their contributions to the mental health of adolescents
Abstract
Introduction: Adolescence is a crucial phase that covers the age range of 10 to 19 years or 12 to 18 years. This transition phase can be seen as crucial in preventing mental illnesses in adulthood. It is crucial to consider, for mental health, the elements of adolescent development. Team sports promote the development of a sense of collaboration and teamwork, that is, they help in the socialization of children and adolescents, helping to maintain good mental health. Objective: The objective of this review was to identify the contributions of team sports to mental health during adolescence. Materials and Methods: The study is a systematic literature review on scientific articles in scientific journals allocated in the database: Scientific Electronic Library Online - Scielo.Org, using the terms: Collective Sports, Adolescents and Mental Health. Results: 49 articles were found with the terms used in the search. After reading the articles, 39 articles were included in the exclusion criteria and 10 in the inclusion criteria. Discussion: In the 10 selected articles, a total of 5,071 adolescents were used as a sample, with a minimum age of 10 years and a maximum of 19 years, using various procedures as research instruments, the majority of which were questionnaires. Conclusion: In conclusion, the studies highlight that adolescents often do not have self-knowledge regarding the quality of their own mental health or the benefits that physical exercise can bring to it and that adolescents who practice team sports have better development of skills and attributes.
