Abstract

Handgrip strength is defined as the muscle force generated by the hands. It has been much investigated in the scientific literature, being important for health and determinant for sports performance and competitive success in combat modalities. The present narrative review focused on exploring and describing the importance of manual pressure strength for combat sports and understanding the need for sports performance. This is a narrative review of the literature. The databases used were Scielo, academic Google, Pubmed and Web of Science. 2,722 articles were found. Being that 176 duplicate articles. Of the total number of articles found, 1,909 were excluded for not analyzing the study focus variable. Of these, 609 were selected because they met the inclusion criteria. In the end, 28 studies were included and used for the design of the study. The results showed that handgrip strength is essential for most combat modalities, is crucial for combat sports that use grappling, immobilizations, and throws. In addition, other categories of sports such as court, field, adventure and water sports also require high levels of strength in the hands and fingers to be successful in competitions. In this sense, it is concluded that handgrip strength is not just a need for combat modalities, it is essential for all sports modalities investigated in this study.
