Benefits of Pilates method on disc hernia treatmet
Abstract
The intervertebral disc herniation is a common cause of back pain. This pain causes restriction of movement and may lead to decreased flexibility and postural problems. The Pilates method is an educational program focused on strengthening the postural trunk muscles and improves flexibility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Pilates Methods in relation about the flexibility, feeling pain in the spine and posture in women with a herniated disc. For that six women (aged 35-55 years) affected from herniated disc (cervical, thoracic and or lumbar) participated. The volunteers performed before and after 6 weeks of intervention with Pilates (twice a week, 60 min each session), the following evaluation: flexibility, posture and pain levels. The results showed an increase (p <= 0.01) on flexibility (23.4 ± 4.8 to 29.3 ± 4.1 cm) in the sit and reach test and reduction (p <= 0.01) of pain level (7.3 ± 2.23 to 0.7 ± 1.2) (EVA scale). In addition, there were significant improvements in posture in regarding about the position head, shoulder height, shoulder blades and hips. From these results we can conclude that the Pilates method is effective regarding the gain of flexibility, improvement of levels of pain and posture in herniated patients, corroborating data from other similar studies.
