Abstract

Introduction: The increased work of breathing, respiratory muscle fatigue and dyspnea influence the ability to perform exercise of high intensity. Respiratory muscle is composed of skeletal muscles; there will be responses and physiological adaptations to training. Objective: evaluate what are the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) on pulmonary function and cardiovascular capacity in healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: A review of literature through the databases Lilacs, Medline and Pubmed, randomized controlled scientific articles in English and Portuguese, published between January 2000 and September 2010, IMT intervention studies with healthy subjects, with analyzes the effects of IMT in lung function and cardiovascular capacity. Results: 19 randomized controlled articles were included in the review. Discussion: There was heterogeneity in studies, 88% (n = 15) of studies showed positive effects on maximal inspiratory pressure, 47% (n = 7) in lung volumes, 13% (n = 1) in maximal oxygen uptake, 7% (n = 1) in heart rate, 68% (n = 13) in exercise performance. Conclusion: IMT produced different effects on lung function and cardiovascular capacity, the heterogeneity makes the comparison between studies becomes difficult, more research is needed on the underlying mechanisms in the improvement on physical performance after IMT.
