Abstract

Introduction and Aims:The peak height velocity (PVE) and peak velocity of body mass (PVMC) measures are used to characterize the changes in body size and composition during the adolescent growth spurt. The aim of this study was to determine differences between longitudinal and mixed longitudinal design research on the study of age that occurs PHV and PWV, through body growth curves in boys and girls, from 10 to 15 years old, evaluated. Materials and Methods:The sample of longitudinal design consisted of 71 students of both sexes, followed by 10 to 15 years of age, between the years 2003 and 2008 as well as, the sample of mixed longitudinal design was drawn in four cohorts.PHVand PWV were calculated by the mean values of one year less the mean value of one year before. It was considerate the highest values which one that showed the highest mean values alterations. All analyses were performed by 18.0 SPSS for windows. Results:The main results of this study showed that the PHV of the mixed longitudinal design occurred one year earlier than that one found in longitudinal design for both sexes. However, PWV occurred at the same age in the two research designs for male. This result was not found for girls when PWV occurred one year earlier in a longitudinal study compared to the mixed longitudinal study. Conclusions:Mixed longitudinal seems not to be the best research design to determining PHV and PWV.
