Efecto de la suplementación con β-alanina en deportistas, practicantes de actividad física y personas sedentarias

Resumen

El objetivo fue investigar, a través de una revisión sistemática de la literatura, los efectos de la suplementación con β-alanina en el rendimiento de atletas, practicantes de actividad física y personas sedentarias, en ejercicios de alta intensidad. En el levantamiento bibliográfico se utilizaron las bases de datos PubMed, Scielo, Science Direct, Scopus y Cochrane. Se seleccionaron 15 artículos originales, publicados en ocho países, involucrando 118 atletas masculinos, de cinco deportes, y 213 practicantes de actividades físicas y sedentarias, de ambos sexos, con edades entre 21 y 29,2 años, y hasta 44 ancianos con edades entre 64 y 72,8 años , de ambos sexos. Estos sujetos recibieron suplementación de 2 a 6,4 g diarios de β-alanina, durante cuatro a doce semanas. Los artículos revisados ​​mostraron que la suplementación con β-alanina tuvo un efecto beneficioso para los deportistas al retrasar la fatiga muscular, aumentando la potencia y la fuerza muscular durante los ejercicios de alta intensidad, mientras que para los no deportistas el principal resultado encontrado fue retrasar la fatiga. Estos resultados fueron atribuidos al aumento de carnosina muscular, resultante de la administración de β-alanina, sin embargo, solo tres estudios evaluaron directamente este contenido, confirmando esta hipótesis. No se observaron efectos secundarios con la suplementación con β-alanina, a las dosis administradas. Se concluye que la suplementación con β-alanina puede ser eficaz para mejorar el rendimiento de los deportistas, aumentando la capacidad física de practicantes de actividades físicas y personas sedentarias, incluidos los ancianos.
